Ledro Lake: a turquoise pearl set among the mountains

lago_dall_alto

Turquoise and transparent waters where in summer you can swim and dive, but also go sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Lake Ledro is truly a corner of paradise, an oasis for a holiday of sport and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes.

The natural setting is truly extraordinary: Lake Ledro is in fact located in a small valley, which connects the Garda plain to the Chiese valley. Set between green mountains that are reflected in its clear waters, Lake Ledro has an area of about 2.2 square kilometres and a circumference of about 10 km. At 655 metres above sea level, it is the highest regatta basin in Italy and welcomes sailing and kayaking champions from all over the world who compete in exciting regattas and match races.

But Lake Ledro is above all a calm and clear lake, one of the cleanest in Trentino. In summer, the four public and equipped beaches are easy to reach and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy the lake to the full, with swimming, diving, water games, long swims, pedalo and canoe rides. The lake is a real magnet for water sports enthusiasts, but also for families with children, thanks to the waters that are never too cold (even 24° C on the hottest days), for those who simply want to sunbathe in peace and enjoy a weekend or a relaxing holiday.

When the weather is cold, however, Lake Ledro is the destination for romantic or relaxing walks along the shores or exploring the dense network of paths in the surrounding area. Many of these can also be explored by mountain bike. At higher altitudes, the views are nothing short of marvellous, both of the lake and the surrounding mountains. For the more experienced, one of the best views of the lake is from the Monte Corno peak. An alternative way of discovering the natural environment around the lake is Ledro Land Art, a route through the wooded area of the Pur plain with fascinating sculptures.

What makes Lake Ledro special and unique in the world are the pile dwellings of Molina di Ledro. This is a large, perfectly preserved pile-dwelling village dating back to the Neolithic period, about 4,000 years ago. In this carefully reconstructed archaeological site and in the nearby Lake Ledro Pile-Dwelling Museum you can discover how our ancestors lived thousands of years ago. These features make it the most important pile-dwelling site in Europe and since 2011 it has been a Unesco World Heritage Site, a title that was added in 2015 to the Unesco Biosphere Reserve status awarded to the Trentino area known as Alpi Ledrensi and  Judicaria, which also includes Valle di Ledro.
